Melt
Analysis and Testing System MT-5C
The
MT-5C is used for the detection of contamination and other impurities
in the polymer-melt for laboratory and or production lines. The
system is suitable for:
Inspection of impurities
and foreign particles in polymer melt or any other liquid substance
(eg, water, chemicals etc).
Integration of the system
into the existing production process extruder ensures that neither
the speed of production nor the process itself is interfered with
or altered.

OCS has
been developing and supplying measuring systems based on optical data
processing and also related devices for the polymer industry for over
10 years. During this time, the company has become one of the leaders
in this area.
Application
The Melt Analysis and Testing System (MT-5C) with colour
camera was developed for the detection of contamination and impurities
in liquid substances. This system was primarily conceived for the inspection
of polymer melt. However, it can also be used to inspect any other liquid
substance ( i.e. water, chemicals etc.) for impurities.
Transferring
the task of quality testing to a device based on high-precision optics
not only reduces the employee workload, but ensures objective defect assessment
and consistent and exact quality control. The integration of the system
into the existing production process does not compromise the speed of
production or the process itself.
Mode
of Operation
The measuring cell itself is considerably smaller than
conventional testing systems. It is integrated into the melt flow of the
production line and carries out a continuous inspection. This requires
the creation of a bypass through which the substance can be either fed
back to the main flow or disposed of after inspection as necessary. The
measuring cell is installed at the bypass. This is achieved using an all-purpose
mounting frame. It is constructed to be mounted in any position required.
Only moving particles such as foreign substances, contamination or un-melts
of 20µm (standard) in size are registered. Particles which are not actually
in the flowing substance and are consequently not moving, but do appear
in the image, are not counted as impurities. These may be dust particles
on the camera lens, spots on the sapphire glass windows, or burn particles.
Features
The user-friendly software is programmed to allow a
large variety of testing criteria which enables the user to customise
the inspection. The diverse kinds of defects can be categorised into different
definable shape factors to classify, for example, the frequency of certain
recurring defects. The system can also be adjusted to ignore defects with
certain characteristics or to detect only particular definable defects.
The process
can be observed on a colour monitor and additionally indicated defects
marked or indexed. Adjustments made for the inspection, as well as images
of special interest, can be stored on hard disk. It is possible for a
large amount of different measurement parameters to be defined and selected.
The possibility
of storing a vast amount of information on the melt quality allows, for
example, a long-term evaluation, which can be presented in various types
of graphs or tables (time behaviour, histograms etc.). With a colour printer,
graphic and tabular displays can be printed out at adjustable intervals
during the measurement. Furthermore, a test certificate can be printed
out after each completed measurement, and the layout designed by the user.
