Yield stress is the minimum force required to initiate flow. It is often seen at start-up of mixers and pumps, when a higher than usual energy is required to begin rotation. This peak in energy required is due to the yield stress, which causes the material to display solid-like properties until the yield stress has been exceeded. Once the yield stress has been overcome, the material behaves like a liquid and will flow.
