Capillary Breakup Extensional Rheometer (CaBER)

Often the Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic industries must overcome problems related to transport, mixing, filling and thermal and/or shear stability of their products.

These issues are often dominated by the flow properties of their product like steady shear, viscosity, yield stress, viscoelasticity, extensional viscosity and time-to-breakup of strands.

Following is an overview of the available rheological instruments that Rheology Solutions offer from Thermo Scientific. By measuring flow properties of problematic materials and engineer can forecast difficulties in processing and address them appropriately, leading to a more reliable process and higher quality end product.

A wide variety of materials can be tested using viscometric techniques and instrumentation. Newtonian liquids have a steady shear viscosity which is independent of the shear rate (shear rate is analogous to the flow rate). There are many instances of Newtonian liquids in the type of low-cost rotational instrument. These viscometers can also be used as a relative measure of the viscosity of non-Newtonian liquids (whoses viscosity is a function of the shear rate).
